This paper explores the HRH policy lessons from four countries – Brazil, Ghana, Mexico and Thailand – purposefully selected for having achieved sustained improvements in accelerating progress towards UHC since 1990.Part of their success lies in the policy focus on the health workforce to expand population coverage and the health benefits package.

Scaling-up the medical work- force in Timor-Leste: Challenges of a great leap forward

The health services system of Timor-Leste (T-L) will, by 2015, add 800 physicians, most of them trained in Cuba, to the 233 employed by the national health system in 2010-2011. The need for more physicians is not in discussion: poor health indicators, low coverage and utilization of services, and poor quality of services are well documented in T-L.

A study of aggregate data collected from the literature and official sources was undertaken to estimate expected and observed prevalence of Trypanosoma cruzi infection, annual incidence of congenital transmission and rate of underdiagnosis of Chagas disease among Latin American migrants in the nine European countries with the highest prevalence of Chagas disease.
